Workshop on Counter-Terrorism in Dhaka from 8-10 November

Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, in
association with the United Nations Counter-Terrorism
Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and with the support
of the Governments of Australia and Denmark, are hosting
a "Regional Workshop for Police Officers and Prosecutors
in South Asia on effectively countering Terrorism"-
in Dhaka, from 8 to 10 November 2009. The purpose of the
workshop is to enhance the counter-terrorism capacities
of law enforcement personnel in the region. The workshop
will also provide an opportunity to discuss the role of
the police and prosecution services in combating terrorism
and the challenges faced by those services in leading
effective investigations and prosecutions. It will also
provide a forum for raising the awareness of police and
prosecution services regarding the latest available investigation
and forensic technologies and techniques, and for the
sharing of experiences and best practices.
The workshop is expected to be attended by experts from
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The South Asia Association for
Regional Cooperation (SAARC) will also participate, as
an observer. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
(UNODC), the Office of the High Commissioner for Human
Rights, the International Criminal Police Organization
(INTERPOL) and the Commonwealth Secretariat will facilitate
technical sessions. All preparations in this regard are
now underway.
